4 out of 5 stars A very good printer   March 3, 2010
georgehd
This printer is far superior to the HP printer that it replaces. I use it primarily for printing and faxing and both functions work well. It also scans and that feature is much better than that on my old machine. The one huge draw back is the install process. It seemed to go very well. In fact I commented to my wife that this was the easiest install that I had ever had with a printer. Alas I then realized that the machine would not print. I got error messages and stalls in the queue. After many tries and a completely new install, I finally called HP tech support. It took 45 minutes to get the machine functioning correctly. it seems that there are issues with Snow Leopard and the install disc that comes with the machine is not up to date. This creates a big problem. Tech support was very patient and guided me through a rather complicated procedure which did result in a successful install. I would urge HP to include a warning in RED that a special install is required for snow leopard. You must have the latest software downloads on your computer and you must use the latest install download from HP. Before this install, you must remove any previous installs; there should be no HP folder under Applications (unless you have more than one HP printer). I gave the printer 4 stars as a working printer; it would get 1 star for ease of installation.

4 out of 5 stars It's good for the money!   March 2, 2010

Not a bad buy, but Ihad to purchase the 8500 modell soon after cause I really needed the wireless feature!

3 out of 5 stars flaky DHCP networking support?   February 27, 2010
A happy snow thrower (Wayne, PA USA)
So far seems OK; mostly used the scanning & send-fax (faxing documents directly from MacOS print dialog). MacOS support for this printer seems pretty good (using the HP-supplied CD on Leopard 10.5 and without having to install anything on SnowLeopard 10.6).

I second other comments about the unit being loud (at startup and when scanning).

Initial setup was simple, using wired ethernet.

Unfortunately, a week or so later it was having networking problems (independent of whether connecting w/ Mac or PC): The D-Link router claimed it had assigned the printer a DHCP address, but the printer thought it didn't get a DHCP address and used a self-assigned address. The result was nothing could communicate. Most likely one or both of the D-Link router and the HP printer have a subtle incompatibility in the firmware DHCP implementation, and the two don't reliably work together.

Once I got everything reset, I configured the printer to use a static IP address to avoid future DHCP issues (relatively easy to do with the printer's web-configuration tool -- once everything was reset.). HP's web-support information was only fair on the topic of recovering from hosed networking, and I improvised a bit to fix the networking. (If I hadn't had past experience with network configuration, I believe that the web support would have been insufficient and I would have had to call HP support.)

If in doubt (?maybe if your router is a D-Link?), give it a static IP address immediately after completing initial setup.

If it hadn't been for the later problems, "setup" would get 4 or 5 stars; due to the DHCP issues, "setup" gets 1 star.

4 out of 5 stars Good value, easy setup and use   February 14, 2010

I needed a printer and scanner for my consulting business, and I was on a budget. The HP Officejet 6500 packs a wallop for the price. It was easy to set up, and the online help makes it easy to use. Furthermore, the price on Amazon was outstanding compared to other providers. The print quality is fine, and I have made great use of it so far. I highly recommend this product, and I highly recommend getting it through Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Good printer - throws paper a bit, but otherwise fine   February 13, 2010
T. L. OCONNOR (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
The printer has been working very well. We really like the scanning capabilities - very good quality scan. Only complaint is that the paper flies out of the output bin if the paper catch is not extended. We don't always have it out because it gets in the way in our small home office, but it's a problem we can live with. Generally, we are happy with the printer.
