A good fully featured printer at a reasonable price March 9, 2010 David K. Qualls (Jacksonville, FL USA) This is a good quality, full feature combo unit and is very reasonably priced. Since you can pretty well count on replacing a printer/scanner/fax every couple of years or so, finding one at less than $200 is the perfect fit for me. I have also always liked the seperate ink cartridge/colors design of the HP Photosmarts. Overall this is a very good, middle of the road piece of consumable equipment.
Avoid this printer--too many bugs March 8, 2010 Timothy P. Getzoff (Dallas, TX USA) I purchased the 309a after using an Canon MP780 for about 4 years. After struggling with this printer for 4 months, I miss the Canon. There was some ergonomic issues that I liked better on the Canon, but I figured that was just a learning curve. Now, however, there are two main problems that make me wish I returned this printer when I could:
First, as has been mentioned by other reviewers, this printer burns through ink, and the ink is way more expensive than the Canon. I had gotten used to buying cheap ink through ebay for the Canon, but couldn't find any cheaper sources for the HP ink. For somebody who uses this in a home office, this is a deal killer.
Second, and more significant, this printer has lots of bugs. I scan a lot (does anyone fax anymore? as an aside, the few times I tried to fax with this, it didn't work. I got dial tone, but said remote fax was busy. I question this, but didn't pursue to find out whether printer was problem). About one-third of my scan attempts, the printer freezes right before it scans, then gives me error telling me to reboot the printer. No rhyme or reason--sometimes it wants to work, sometimes it doesn't. There were some other minor issues, like the envelope feeder freezing up. I've been through tech support, and it was no help. They blamed my wireless connection (my computer, router, and printer are all in same room, so that is not the problem).
The photo print quality, however, is excellent. Way better than the Canon. I am probably going to put my Canon back in service (it needs a new print head), and use the HP printer solely for printing pictures. It doesn't do anything else reliably.
Pleased with this printer March 8, 2010 Natalie Cerasuolo (Ft. Lauderdale, FL United States) I recently set up a wireless network at my home and wanted a wireless color printer. I wasn't in the market for an all-in-one but decided on this one anyway because it printed on both sides, the print was very good and I thought it would be good for school work, projects, etc. It turns out it was very easy to install on my PC and net book; I run XP on one and 7 on the other. I had to type my network ID into the printer, but once I did, it recognized it and the rest was a breeze.
Printed text from this printer is really nice. I printed one picture to try it, and it was awesome! It's really expensive to print lab quality pictures so I won't be doing it that often, but it's nice to know when I do it will be beautiful! The copy and scan features are very easy, I like that you can do them without touching your PC. You can also scan to a flash drive, using the USB port on the front of the printer, instead of your PC, nice!
I didn't connect the fax, because I don't need, one so I don't know anything about that feature.
This printer exceeded expectations for me, ease of install, ease of use and superb quality of print. The price at Amazon is way better than the price I paid.
Lots of software issues March 5, 2010 geri (Chicago, IL USA) I uninstalled everything and reinstalled from the HP website. The third time trying I could not get the printer to recognize the computer. Then I had to call tech support - that a waste of time nightmare that was. Why does a company of this size have such horrible tech/customer service support? I am so frustrated playing with this thing during the business week that I will have to wait for the weekend to try again. This was my 5th HP printer and each one has gone a little downhill. I'm not really sure why I purchased this - I guess it was the "best of the worst" all in one's I found!
Disappointing installation, reliability, customer service and functionality March 4, 2010 John Lund (Los Angeles, CA USA) I bought this unit to replace an earlier HP PhotoSmart printer that we had used for several years and with which we were very pleased. Sadly, this machine has been a disappointment and a hassle. The choice for 4-function printers (printer, copier, scanner, and fax) is very limited, and my past experience with HP printers gave me great confidence. I was mistaken. Knowing what I do now, I would not have bought this model.
Installation: The installation was a fiasco, taking a total of 14 hours over three days. The printer was installed on a HP computer running Windows Vista. The software failed to fully install, with several functions falling to work (scan and copy in particular). Following the instructions from HP, both online and then by phone, I uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times, each time worse than the previous. Finally, they instructed me to use a registry cleaner and completely remove all references to their software, and then install the software for a different model. That solution finally worked.
Reliability and customer service. Once the system was installed, I realized that I could not copy or scan from the flatbed. After several fruitless calls with customer service, I finally realized on my own that the automatic feeder cover was not properly manufactured and therefore did not close properly. I called back customer service, explained what I discovered. The customer rep agreed with me, but still required that I go through all the steps that I had previously gone through on all the previous calls (reset the printer; unplug the printer; reload the paper; etc, etc). Only then was he allowed to talk to his supervisor to request that they replace the machine. They did agree to replace it, but I had to pay shipping and handling ($[...]). That is a significant cost penalty on a machine that cost $[...]. Add to that the value of my time (14 hours to install the software; another 6 hours to trouble shoot the poorly manufactured cover). If I had known that we would incur that additional cost, I would have changed my choice of printer.
The new machine worked without a problem, since the software was already installed.
Functionality: This model is very simiar to the HP Photosmart 6900 it replaced. Added features include duplex printing and CD printing. However, I find the software interface somewhat less helpful than the previous model. In particular, you can no longer manage copying from the desktop (number of copies; resolution; etc); you must do it from the printer itself. The software is also much slower to respond. The machine is somewhat noisier than the previous model. The print quality is very good.
One significant shortcoming is the printer cartridges: they tend to leak. The previous model had very clean cartridges that could be handled without any risk. These will leave spots it you are not careful how you handle them. Unfortunately, they require that you break off a piece of plastic to expose the ink inside, thus forcing you to handle them more than the previous version.
All in all, a major disappointment and a discredit to the HP brand.
